1. If you write a technote that includes a schematic make damn sure you labeled the pins right.

2. If you build a network device with a password, be sure to include a password reset function.

OpenGear is like $1.5k for 48 ports, same features as Lantronix/Cyclades/etc - half the cost; few little gems like Nagios NRPE support, dial-out-on-eth-failure, etc.

That's not bad, but my goal here is to get 8 ports for as little money as possible as it's for my own rack in the garage. This unit cost me $45 shipped so that would be perfect if it would work.
