We got a new TV. 32 inches of LCD goodness. Now to figure out how to make it submit to my will and accept input from a 16 year span of video game consoles.

Now to figure out how to make it submit to my will and accept input from a 16 year span of video game consoles.

Classic xbox with component cables, modded.

See below about xbox's not being allowed in this house, hehe. I do have plans, and they are coming together nicely. :D

see below! I suggest you re-case it. Seriously, it's the best way to go.

I second the classic xbox route to replace all those consoles, otherwise you're going to need a audio/video switcher that can handle all your various cable types. I'd go with a new A/V receiver over that option, Onkyo makes some especially nice 5.1/7.1 equipment that won't drain your wallet. If you create a login for shoponkyo.com it'll show you some "member-only" deals too.

the wii play has a duck hunt!

no, it's not the same.

but he never brought the real duck hunt out anyway. :/

I think people are seriously underestimating both your ability and commitment to connecting up those old game consoles.

I look forward to playing Soul Caliber some day soon.

they also have no idea that an xbox is not allowed under my roof.
Mar. 5th, 2007 02:13 am (UTC)
eh, once you solder those wires in and replace the firmware, it loses all it's microsoftyness and becomes nothing more than a decently-rad PC with built-in component cables.

Meh! No can do!

Besides, I think there was confusion anyway - we have a lot of consoles, and not all of them can be emulated. He wants to use the AV switch we have, and set it up so we can just push one button to set up the switch and the settings on the TV. He's having fun doing it. All I care about is, in no particular order, Soul Calibur, Guitar Hero II, Wii Sports. And I still like the Dreamcast Soul Calibur best. So there.

I gotta admit, I'm curious why not ;) Also, which consoles can't be emulated? That's got to be some obscure shit.

I wasn't confused. I've got a bunch of consoles too, but they're all just sitting in boxes now that I can just turn on one thing and play any game for any of them with a few clicks.

DC Soul Calibur is definitely the best version of the game. I prefer PSX's Bushido Blade for my weapons-based fighting games, though :)

I'm stubborn, that's why not? :) More seriously, I can't actually picture it making any sense in our situation.

The PS2 can't be emulated can it? Even if it can, I don't want to - some of the games would be crap if emulated, others require special controllers (hi, Guitar Hero!) and I also USE the PS2 console to watch DVDs. And obviously the Wii cannot be emulated.

So, having a minimum of two consoles, we're back to square one! Two consoles or five consoles are all the same once he figures out how to make our existing AV switcher do what he wants it to do.

But seriously, YUGH, the day I replace my Dreamcast with an Xbox is the day I throw in the video game towel. :P

stubbornness is a legit answer! Heh.

You're absolutely right, PS2, Wii, Dreamcast (to an extent) are all better on the original hardware.

(S)NES, Genesis, TG16, intellivision, atari, mame... those'd be better off an xbox.

I guess the whole "16 year span" thing made me think that the problem was figuring out how to get a bunch of older consoles with their RF adapters to work/look good on a modern display. That's actually the only reason I'd consider using an xbox with emulators... make getting the image on the screen someone else's problem. There's also the ridiculous (read: nonlinear) price change as you add inputs to a switch.

Ah, the Wii is helping make previous Nintendo consoles unnecessary as well, in addition to the Genesis! You can now purchase some classic games for (S)NES and Genesis from the Wii store. As soon as Mario Kart 64 comes out on the WIi store, I think the N64 is going to bite the dust.

The TV actually seems advanced enough to handle the older consoles just as well as it handles the new ones, with the appropriate display settings for ye olde schoole. The "issue" is he wants to make it fancy so we can press a single button to switch to what we want, including the correct TV settings. :)

He's determined, too. I think he's going to win.
Of course, it was also a major stipulation of the purchase that he wins at this! Or there'll be crazy in the house!!!

There are problems with the wii emulation, which has kept me from purchasing much from there. It's a bummer, too, but they just appear to have taken the easy route when porting.
Mar. 6th, 2007 10:33 pm (UTC)
:O What's wrong with it??
Mar. 6th, 2007 11:11 pm (UTC)

Read the comments. There's some BS/FUD to cut through, but the third comment does a good job highlighting some of the issues, and the fifth cuts through some of the crap.

The bottom line is that Nintendo is not doing faithful ports of their games. The main thing I've heard of is changing/removing codes... which wouldn't be so bad if they weren't such a part of the culture. For Christ's sake, they took THE CODE out of Contra. I have a The Code t-shirt!

There have also been reports that the TG16 emulator is bad, but I've got Bonk's Adventure and it seems pretty damn accurate to me.

p.s. look forward to kicking your ass at Soul Calibur some day soon ♥

Methinks this means I have to fly back to Seattle. I do, after all, need someone to teach me how to play Halo.
Mar. 4th, 2007 11:57 am (UTC)
duh yes. halo, maybe not so much, but we shall face off with Wii tennis and baseball, some Soul Calibur (the soul still burns) and perhaps some Mario Kart Double Dash. I ride on the back, thkx, so I can suckerpunch people coming around.
