I have acquired the last piece needed for my home rack: a console server. I picked it up on eBay for a song and it seems to function properly. There's just one small problem; I don't know the admin password. Normally this would not be a problem as intelligent people build systems whose password can be reset reasonably easily if you have physical access to the unit. Unfortunately this console server was built by Lightwave Communications, and they don't agree. I'm not completely out of luck however. Some fine individual had blogged an adequately detailed set of instructions on how to recover the password here. This requires a good deal more work than simply pressing a button. Fortunately one of my coworkers has the requisite hardware at home and we'll be cracking this bad boy open to wrestle it's secrets from it very soon. Until then I own a very nice brick with an LCD. Lucky me.

wow, what a pain in the ass. what about just putting 12V to the chip and resetting it?

I have no idea what resetting all of non-volatile memory would do. It probably holds the OS as well as the config.

probably. I didn't say it was a ~good~ idea...

Any luck?
Hi Matthew,
I recently just purchased a console server 3200 for our lab off of ebay and have the same problem. I realize it was a while ago but did you have any luck recovering the password by chance? Also, which model was it?

Re: Any luck?
Hi Jason,

It was a Lightwave Console Server 800. I never was able to get the password out of it. I built the BDM interface and hooked it up to a DOS box and parallel port but it never quite worked right. I could halt the processor but never got the RAM dumped. In the end I bought a used Lantronix SC1620. It's entirely likely that I messed something up with the BDM board. It's really too bad that it didn't work out because it would have made a good story :)

Oh well, at least I ended up with a better console server.

Re: Any luck?
Thanks. Looks like I might be headed down that same path.
