I'm looking at a $425 soldering station and thinking that it would be pretty nice to have...

Why is it so expensive? Because it uses hot air instead of a metal tip to do the work. Yes, it can put out a thin stream of air at over 1000 degrees F. I used one once while an undergrad at the U and I have to say that it was a great for reworking electronics.

I wonder if I can find one used...

What brand? Metcal? Metcal are teh sex0rz of the soldering world.

I just got one of those $40 weller stations for the time being. I'd rather be spending money on a decent power supply and oscilloscope.

I've always thought that Weller was where it's at. I currently have a WES50 station that I picked up for $100. The hot air system that I was looking at is the WAD101 (love their names, don't you?) which basically looks just like every other Weller, but with an extra knob on the side.

I took a look at Metcal, and you're right, sexy stuff there. If you ever have an extra PS-800 lying around you'll send it to me, right? ;)
