happy new years peoples

Happy New Year everyone. I hope that you all had fun and stayed safe. The roads are not the best out there right now.

Julie and I get 3 days off in a row together for the first time in I can't remember how long. I think that we will spend it relaxing and unpacking.

Today we bought a Roomba. I know that it's pretty silly, but I think that as long as it works even reasonably well it will help to keep the kitchen and livingroom floors clean. And it's cute.

I also picked up bathroom furnishings and some bits to help finish the network wiring in the house. Hopefully I can get that done this weekend too.

Anyway, very tired. Here's to more fun in the new year.

yeah, but I had a gift card and a coupon for 10% off, so that helped. Plus Julie wanted one too :)

yeah but the stuff they sell here is twice the size, can't do half of what yours can do and costs about 2000 Swiss Franks [$1533] hence... not worth it at all!

yow. Yeah, totally not worth it.

Re: heres to 2005!
A Roomba is a robot vacuum cleaner. And I don't answer LJ questions in my journal, sorry. Have a look at the FAQs or ask a question in support.

Whoa, you gotta let me know how that thing works out. I don't actually want one, but the idea is just cool as hell! ROBOTS!

I wish I had gone to MIT and been a robotician. Hey have you ever played crobots? That was cool.

I know, a robot that cleans the house. How cool is that? It's like the 50's future come true but with less chrome.

what's crobots?

It's a simulation where you write code to control virtual robots that fight. It's text based, curses as I recall. You use a pseudo-c compiler to compile your code (along with the crobots api), then you run it (with competing programs - you could try out your various robot strategies against each other, or have competitions with other people's code) and your robots duke it out. Or pointlessly drive around in circles and shooting at walls, whichever. Very cool little game.

I remember years and years and years ago, like when I was in kindergarten I think, I got this little programmable car for my birthday. It was totally over my head at the time, but it was SO COOL. It had a little control pad under the hood, where you programmed the directions, then you just set it down and had it execute your program. With much cunning, you could get it to cruise down the hallway, do a few laps in the kitchen, then come back, all on it's own!

Man, robot AI is so bitchin'. I really ought to do more of that kind of stuff with the mud.

I remember those cars. I never had one but I saw them in the store. I thought that they were pretty cool. I did have a Tomy Omnibot. You could program him with different moves like that and he had a voice activated remote control. Besides moving he had arms that could come together and grip and object, and he had some pre-programmed chatter that made his eyes light up and stuff.

Now I have Lego Mindstorms, and I don't really use them for much. :/
