Random stuff I've been up to

Today I went shopping and ended up looking at Shun knives. I didn't buy any because that's some serious cash, but now I know what I want so I can save up for it.

I got home in time to handle my on-call shift for work. Fortunately it was a quiet shift so I spent some time in the kitchen. I made french onion soup and an angel food cake. The soup was ok by itself, but once I added the cheese toast it became quite good. I think that my substitution of mead for the white wine resulted in the soup being a bit too sweet. Next time I'll use something drier. The cake came out quite well (I've been making it a lot lately) and we topped some with strawberries and macadamia nut liqueur. That was quite a treat.

In other food news I've been practicing making coconut cake. I've made it three times. The first was an unequivocal disaster (the cake was dry and the frosting thin resulting in the cake absorbing the frosting overnight effectively un-frosting the cake) so it went in the bin. I got it right the second and third times, but I think that it can be even better with some tweaking. I really like the 7 minute frosting, it's easy to make and quite tasty, not heavy like butter cream.

Work has been going very well. My project is approaching beta launch which is very exciting. I'll be down in the bay area in a few weeks, anyone want to hang out?

Cake!

I went on a bit of a baking kick last weekend and made angel food cake, tres leches cake and dulce de leche (good on top of cake.) Then mid week I made another angel feed cake both because it's fun and because we had eaten the first one. I think that I'll have to make another tomorrow, but that's even better because last night I went out and bought a new hand mixer to replace the old one that's about to shake itself to pieces.

Otherwise I've been really busy at work with my project.  It used to be a side project but then it kinda blew up in my face and now there are 3 people (myself included) working on it full time, plus more than a few people helping out in their spare time.  It's been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.

Today started out with me being woken by my phone. This is a wonderful thing to have happened because not only was it [info]crankygirlie calling, but I had screwed up setting the alarm last night and it would never have gone off.

I made it to work with perfect timing. I spent a bit of time helping [info]daveman692 with the project he's working on and did a bit of my own stuff. I then had two meetings in a row followed by a trip to see another prospective colo facility. By the time we got back from that the day was pretty much over. I sat down with [info]dorkmatt and we went over rack setups and what we should be using. We were the last two out of the office by the time we got done with that. I then headed back to my hotel, stopping in at the Virgin Megastore where I picked up a copy of Logan's Run for $8 and Lush to pick up a few nice smelling things for [info]crankygirlie. I went back to my hotel room to drop things off and then headed out in search of food. I didn't have to go far before I found a super tasty (and cheap!) Thai place across the street. I think that I'll have lunch there tomorrow too.

Now I'm back at the hotel. I'm doing backups for LJ and I think that I'll watch that movie now.

Today was another long one. After dragging myself out of bed I got into work just in time for a meeting. After getting a very small amount of work done I was whisked off to lunch with the whole LJ crew at 21st Amendment. Totally delicious. Then [info]dorkmatt and I toured 365 Main. After that I got to sit down and work for another few minutes before it was time to leave.

I headed back to my hotel room to drop off my laptop and such and then jumped on the BART and over to Berkeley to meet up with [info]mooflyfoof. We had thai food and she introduced me to some tasty hard cider. [info]mooflyfoof, the cider, and myself got along very well :)

Then I rode BART back here to the hotel and posted this. Now I think I need to pass out.
