I just deciphered a substitution cipher using nothing more than:

/usr/share/dict/words
perl regexp
3 lines of ruby

That was actually a lot of fun :)

If you enjoy solving them by brain but letting a script do the tedious parts, you might ask testing4l about a script he wrote for the purpose (which was his improved version of one that I wrote). It grabs a sample from the fortune file, does the replacements, and then provides the most basic of interfaces for you to experiment with swapping out letters, or run a grep on /usr/share/dict/words to figure out the possibilities for something. It's fun! :D
